Precision Digital manufactures a wide range of rugged meters and controllers designed for quick and easy display of a variety of process signals in harsh or hazardous areas. These signals include 4-20 mA, 0-10 V, strain gauge, pulse, thermocouple and RTD. Our hazardous-area instruments are approved by FM, CSA, ATEX, and IECEx as explosion-proof, intrinsically safe, and nonincendive. Many of our explosion-proof models feature SafeTouch® through-glass buttons which ensure safe operation without the need to remove the cover. Intrinsically safe, loop-powered instruments derive their operating power from the 4-20 mA current loop with a relatively low voltage drop, preventing the need to run additional, costly power lines into the hazardous area.

Hazardous Area

  • The PD6938 ProtEX+ pulse input flow rate/totalizers can be installed in a variety of areas (hazardous, dirty, wet, corrosive, hot, or cold) to provide convenient and informative display of flow rate and total from any pulse output flowmeter. These instruments will accept a variety of pulse inputs, including slow pulse rates. They can be powered from a battery, 9-30 VDC, or the 4-20 mA output loop, have on-board datalogging capabilities, come with approvals for intrinsic safety, and can be ordered with optional 4-20 mA output and two relays.

    The PD6938 can operate down to -40°C and is certified by the agencies to be installed in areas that get as cold as -55°C.

    The PD6938 ProtEX+ is available in aluminum and stainless steel enclosures that are designed for easy use and installation. The process connection is available in M20, 3/4" NPT and 1" NPT and there are two other conduit holes for field wiring.

    Free, PC-based, MeterView XL software that connects to the meter via a micro-USB cable is available for programming and setup of the instruments. Four CapTouch through-window buttons are available to operate the instrument without removing the cover.

    All models come equipped with two open collector outputs and a digital input. There are also models available with Modbus RTU RS-485 communications, two solid-state relays, and isolated 4-20 mA analog output options.

  • The ProtEX-MAX PD8-6000 explosion-proof process meter offers all the functionality of the ProVu PD6000 as a CSA, ATEX, and IECEx certified explosion-proof product. It is available in an aluminum or stainless steel enclosure and will operate over a wide temperature range of -55 to 65°C (-67 to 149°F). It accepts a process current (4-20 mA) or process voltage (0-5V, 1-5V, etc.) signal and displays it on a dual-line, 6-digit Sunbright sunlight readable display. The meter includes a 24 VDC power supply to drive the transmitter and can be equipped with four internal relays and a 4-20 mA output. The PD8-6000 can be programmed and operated without opening the housing by using the built-in SafeTouch through-glass buttons or the RS-485 serial communication port with free Modbus protocol.

  • The PD685 is an easy to use, loop-powered indicator, certified by CSA, ATEX and IECEx as intrinsically safe. The PD685 carries international certifications under both the Class/Division System and Zone System, and is thereby suitable for use in gas and dust hazardous areas worldwide. For Division 2 applications where intrinsically safe interfaces are not needed, the PD685 is able to be installed without barriers! To achieve this ability, the PD685 underwent a special 'nonarcing assessment' under the UL 121201 and CSA C22.2 No. 213 standards, and was determined to be a device incapable of causing an ignition on its own. The PD685 is wellsuited for both indoor and outdoor applications and carries a variety of environmental ratings, including NEMA 4, Type 4X and IP67.

    The PD685 can be seen from considerable distance in bright sunlight or dimly lit areas when the standard backlight feature is activated. The fact that this meter is loop-powered means that there is no need to run additional, costly power lines into a hazardous area. The meter gets all of the power it needs from the 4-20 mA loop and its 1 V (4 V with backlight) drop results in a minimal burden on the loop. The meter features a wide -40 to 75°C operating temperature range and is available with a ½" conduit hole in a location of your choice for easy installation. Calibration is a quick two-step process involving the adjustment of only two sets of coarse and fine, non-interacting potentiometers.

Instead of the usual decimal display, the meter displays level in feet, inches, and fractions of an inch with a 20-segment tank level indicator. The secondary display can show a custom unit or tag, percent full, or a second scale for the 4-20 mA input used to indicate volume. The backlight feature makes the display visible under any lighting condition and can be powered from either the 4-20 mA loop or from a separate DC power supply.

The product is CSA Certified as Explosion-Proof, Dust-Ignition-Proof, and Flame-Proof, and ATEX & IECEx Certified as Explosion-Proof. It is available in either an aluminum or stainless steel enclosure with ¾" or M20 conduit connections. It will operate down to -40°C and is approved for installation in areas where the temperature gets as cold as -55°C, however, the display will cease functioning.

  • The ProtEX-RTP PD6830 is an explosion-proof flow rate/totalizer that can display flow rate and total from a pulse output flowmeter. Its display has a five digit upper line for rate, a seven alpha-numeric character lower line for total, and comes standard with a backlight. Like all ProtEX products, the PD6830 carries FM, CSA, ATEX, and IECEx approvals for use in hazardous areas. It can be powered from an included battery or a 24 VDC external power supply. Some features that really make the PD6830 flow rate/totalizer stand out are its automatic unit conversions from flowmeter k-factor units, ability to log up to 1024 data points, and SafeTouch® through-glass buttons. These buttons allow the PD6830 to be programmed and operated through the glass, thus eliminating the need to remove the cover in a hazardous area.
