Applications

In-line blending is a difficult process to control, especially during start-up, or in the event of a power loss/cycling. The F124 helps resolve this issue by offering three start-up/power-up modes. The controller also offers PI control for close control of the ratio setpoint.

Signal Output

OVERVIEW


Introduction

The F124 has been designed to ensure that two flows are kept at the same ratio even if the flows are changing. The F124 is a key product of the Fluidwell Process Controller family and is the alternative to replace existing pneumatic controllers in local control loops.

Operational

There are three operation modes:
Hand: the control output can be manually changed, there is no loop connection.
Local: the setpoint can be set and/or changed, corresponding with the process value of flow B.
Ratio: (normal operation) set the desired ratio in %, the process value corresponds with flow B/A.

Display

The display has large 17mm segments which show flowrate A and B, desired ratio and actual ratio. On-screen engineering units are easily configured from a comprehensive selection.

Configuration

All configuration settings are accessed via a simple operator menu which can be passcode protected. Each setting is clearly indicated with an alphanumerical description, therefore avoiding confusing abbreviations and baffling codes. Once familiar with one F-series product, you will be able to program all models in the series without a manual. All settings are safely stored in EEPROM memory in the event of sudden power loss.

Analog Output Signal

The valve of the additive flow is controlled via the (0)4 - 20mA or 0 - 10V DC output signal. The output signal is updated ten times per second. The output signal can be passive, active or isolated where the passive output type will loop power the F124 as well.

Signal Input

The F124 will accept most pulse input signals for flow or mass flow. The input signal type can be selected by the user in the configuration menu without having to adjust any sensitive mechanical dip-switches or jumpers.

Alarm Output

Two fixed alarm outputs are available to transmit the ratio alarm condition, 1 low and 1 high alarm output. The output signals can be a passive NPN, active PNP or an isolated electro-mechanical relay. If there is a no-flow the alarm output will be disabled.

Start/Power-up Mode

In-line blending is a difficult process to control, especially during start-up, or in the event of a power loss/cycling. The F124 helps resolve this issue by offering three start-up/power-up modes, those are Hand mode, Safety mode, and Continue mode.

In Hand mode, the output is initially placed into a zero flow setting. The operator will then increase the additive flow until they achieve the proper ratio % on the display. Once that value is reached, the operator can switch to the Ratio (or automatic mode)

In Safety mode, the position of the proportional valve is preset at start-up. If the process always uses the same ratio, you will have learned an optimum or typical valve position for that ratio. This value can be programmed as the Safety (or start) output value until the F124 is placed into Ratio (or automatic) mode. There is an external contact that can be used to force the system into Safety mode at start-up, or any other time.

In Continue mode, when power is applied, it remembers the proportional output value at the time of power loss, and resets the output to that same value when power is reapplied.

The F124 certainly brings flexibility in resolving start-up/power-cycling issues.

Communication

All process data and settings can be read and modified manually or through the Modbus communication link (RS232 / RS485). Full Modbus functionality remains available for the Intrinsically Safe version (TTL).

Hazardous area

For hazardous area applications, this model has been ATEX certified Intrinsically Safe ATEX Certification II 1 GD EEx ia IIB / IIC T4 T100°C with an allowed operational temperature of -30°C to +70°C (-22°F to +158°F). A flame proof enclosure is also available with the rating ATEX Certification II 2 GD EEx d IIB T5.

Enclosures

Various types of enclosures can be selected, all ATEX approved. As standard the F117 is supplied in a GRP panel mount enclosure, which can be converted to a GRP field mount enclosure. Most popular is our rugged aluminum field mount enclosure with IP67 / NEMA 4X rating. Both European or U.S. cable gland entry threads are available.

HAZARDOUS AREA APPLICATIONS

The F124-XI has been ATEX approved by the KEMA for use in Intrinsically Safe applications. It is approved according to ATEX Certification II 1 GD EEx ia IIB/IIC T4 T100°C for gas and dust applications with an operational temperature range of -30°C to +70°C (-22°F to + 158°F). It is allowed to connect up to six barriers in IIB applications or one barrier in IIC applications. Full functionallity of the F124 remains available, including 8.2V sensor excitation for e.g. Namur sensors (type PD) and the Modbus communication type CT. A flame proof enclosure is available as well with rating ATEX ATEX Certification II 2 GD EEx d IIB T5.

NOTE: If you require the product to be Intrinsically Safe (ATEX, IECEx, CSA or c-us), the options you choose should only include those options that carry the ATEX symbol next to them. The Configurator will not allow you to mix and match options, unless the product is to be used in a Safe Area.
